Chicago - 2011

There have been six Triennial Reunion of BCHSIAA: the last one held in August of this year in Chicago, the previous ones being in Seattle, Washington, DC, Toronto, Honolulu, and San Francisco.

The venues are decided during the general meetings of each of the reunions. San Francisco was voted in for the seventh, in 2014. While there were two contenders including Los Angeles, a vote was placed to decide which one. In other years, it was a matter of suggestion and approval by acclamation. The Chicago group was quite reluctant to take up the challenge, mainly because there was no Chicago chapter to speak of, and there were only a few people who attended the decision-making session. They were also given an extension period to accept the 2011 venue, so it was only in December 2008 that the handful of hardy City-Higher’s agreed.

In the meetings that were organized by the committee, only a few people showed up, in spite of telephone calls and emails to announce the meetings. The BCHSIAA Directory was utilized for this. The first meeting had only five heads accounted for: it was also a Labor Day weekend so there were only a few hardy souls left in town. Their next meeting was an improvement, with 9 people in attendance. It was at this second meeting that the date was set. They also decided that more efforts be placed to get more people involved. A picnic was planned: this is always a crowd-pleaser, especially if there are Filipino specialties made available! Our food culture worked in their favor.

Quarterly meetings were held hence. Class 61 had no one in the area to participate: we miss Nap Meana, who lived in the Chicago area. He would have been, with certainty, active in the organizational phase of the reunion. It became necessary for more frequent meetings, and more potluck meals. Ads were placed in the Filipino newspapers. This boosted more interest in the venture.

“CaƱao Idiay Chicago” work was plentiful: hotels, registration, tours, souvenir program items, bags, banners and the like. By January there were only 5 registrants, increasing to 14 by March. 100 was the goal set with the hotel, and decisions needed to be made to solve this lack of registration numbers. Hotel deposit funds were borrowed from the BCHSIAA in order to hold on to the hotel. Mass emailing, more local advertising, and solicitation of ads for the program went on. Pressure pressure pressure!!! To cancel the banquet or not. To cancel the tours or not.

Finally - the Gala Night attendance was close to 300! With a big sigh of relief, the reluctant hosts became fulfilled hosts at the end. And a Chicago chapter as a bonus.

Class 61 has a few inputs in the souvenir program including a paid ad in exchange for raffle tickets at the Baguio 2011 reunion: the brainchild of Art B. Our thanks to Rudy, Norma and Estrella for making the presence of Class 61 felt!

Bayong

Use of bayong pushed

Monday, 22 August 2011 A Refuerzo

BAGUIO CITY – Residents should patronize the use of "bayong" instead of plastic bags in their daily activities.

Councilor Edgardo Bilog, in a proposed resolution, said the city government should encourage this as a measure to help in the worldwide campaign to reduce toxic wastes and mitigate the impact of climate change.

Bilog said that since plastic bags are "waste materials that can add to the upshot of climate change," residents should learn to avoid their use and instead turn to bayongs.

"Bayong is an old fashioned bag usually made of bamboo strips, pandan leaves and other raw materials that are in abundance in some parts of the nation. Nowadays they are not only being used just for market purposes and for harvesting crops such as fruits and vegetables but could also be toted by students and professionals going to school or offices since weavers are now producing fashionable (ones)," Bilog noted.

He said bayongs could also be deemed as a "symbol of cognizant consumer and a memento of an exotic place or unique tradition for a tourist."

"Its use by people from the lower and upper social classes may be encouraged and if marketed will have an expected earnings of some P520 million per year as per Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) estimates," Bilog noted.

He said there are government agencies like the DTI, who are willing to help the local government units in training interested weavers to enhance their skills and knowledge and encourage industry production and make it a part of a government livelihood program and protect our domestic markets from the influx of imported fabric bags from China and other countries.

Bilog's proposal will be discussed by the city council soon.

Letting go of mothers is hard

Beyond the sunset, O blissful morning.

When with our Saviour heaven's begun.

Earth's toiling ended, O glorious dawning

Beyond the sunset when day is done.

Beyond the sunset, no clouds will gather.

No storms will threaten, no fears annoy.

O day of gladness, O day unending.

Beyond the sunset eternal joy.

Alberto Camero's mother joined our Creator on August 21st and cremated on August 22 at the Beyond the Sunset Crematorium at Irisan.

Letting go of mothers is hard. Our condolences and prayers for the bereaved family of Mrs. Clara Reyes-Camero.

Our thanks to Delma for conveying this news to us.

To the Bucaycay family, our heartfelt condolences on your loss

We received notice from Ludy that her younger beloved brother, Ben, passed away on 16th August.

Ludy and her sister Dr. Eleanor (Babbut), were flying to Baguio. Our deepest condolences. Some of us saw him for the last time, when he made tulod to Ludy at our bonding at Central School in May.

The photo above was taken at the Bucaycay lumber site, in Trancoville at the Castro compound (they had the skating rink concession), before they moved to the present site at Malvar Street.

Congratulations to Mr. Fisherman

One fine August California day, the 7th, Lito V caught the biggest fish in San Pablo Bay at Bay Front Park. His catch was a 45", 38 lbs. "STRIPED BASS' .

As an avid fisherman, he has all what it takes to catch such a fish: aside from his determination, his hi-tech gear also helped: live Bull Head bait with a Stren High Impact test line of 20 lbs. A leather attached of Maxima triple X 25 lbs. gtest line and 4oz. weight sinker. His Baguio muscles took 45 minutes to reel it in shore from 5:30pm to 6:15pm.
