Another Baguio sad story...
An article in Business Mirror reports on a survey showing the decline of accommodation facilities, from 90 perent to 79 percent occupancy. Other destinations are reported on working on packaging their own wonders. Cheap tour packages to other Asian countries also lure away the potential Baguio tourist. Travelers also have access to sea-water activities in Boracay, Palawan and other spots; aerial sports, rock climbing, trekking are among offerings of other areas. Respondents to the survey, when asked why not Baguio, the answers in order were congestion; garbage littered everywhere; dirty and not safe; no more pine trees; traffic jams; overpopulation; water shortage, sidewalk vendors and pollution; and high-travel cost and proximity.
Clearly, the mountains had lost its mystique, and the city’s quaint charm had given way to urban decadence. Tourism stakeholders are now acknowledging that, unless Baguio repackages its destination offers, the city’s old lure will soon become a thing of the past. The city now is venturing into a new niche, as a place “Where the Adventure Begins,” because not too far away are mountain, aquatic and sports thrills sought by the young.
